If you have not followed me then here is the scoop. Last year I decided to make a change. A life change that directly impacted my health.

I decided to change for the better by eating healthier and getting into better physical condition. So far so good and I am excited! Excited that I made up my mind to eat healthier and take care of my well being.

Well, to feel better, live longer, and enjoy the rest of this life I have been gifted with. If you feel the same way then you definitely know the feeling.

In this process, I have accepted a better eating plan and fitness regimen that encourages healthy eating, increased energy, and improved stamina. My eating plan includes lean meats, potent vegetables, and tasty fruits. The posts I share are about my journey with better eating. In them, I highlight a few of the foods I have included in my daily eating plan.

In this posts, I share how including strawberries in your diet help to fight against cardiovascular disease and encourage good blood flow.

Strawberries are a nice addition to any lunch as a snack. Their claim to fame is being high in Vitamin C. You would not think of it as compared to an orange but strawberries are a worthy proponent of being high in Vitamin C., In fact, eating about a serving of strawberries (about 8) provides more Vitamin C than what an orange provides. This is good to know as this offers a bit of variety for us especially if you do not care for oranges.

The first clue that strawberries encourage good heart health is the fact that they are shaped much like a heart. Who knew!

Strawberries possess a unique variety of compounds that help lessen the formation of whats called excessive platelet aggregation(coagulation). This, in short, is the ability of the body to naturally form clots which is a healthy function; Especially with an injury.  But there is an unhealthy condition that causes overactive clotting and this could potentially lead to a more serious issue when in conjunction with cancers and certain blood diseases.

Strawberries complex mix of polyphenols also make it a serious anti-oxidant competitor and a great anti-inflammatory agent. The anti-inflammatory properties assist with allowing more blood flow through veins and arteries which ultimately leads to sufficient oxygen and nutrients being delivered throughout the body.

Strawberries are a low fat zero trans fat product with a decent amount of fiber which is a potent combination for weight loss management. They are composed of about 91% water which can aid in digestion.

One of the best healthy points of including strawberries in your diet is it has one of the best Glycemic index numbers around. Compared to many fresh fruits such as apricots, bananas, watermelon, cantaloupe, or pineapple, strawberries have a number of 40. This is great! Especially for combating blood sugar spikes and the regulation of insulin.

Strawberries can be consumed a variety ways.

  • Strawberries can be included in smoothiesimages-19
  • As a dessert topping on cakes, pies, ice-cream
  • Sliced atop your favorite pancakes or waffle
  • Sliced topping on your favorite meat dish
  • Slivered in salads
  • In your favorite pie
  • Wrapped in vegetable or fruit wrap
  • Made into a bread
  • Jellied and canned
  • Made into a strawberry mousse
  • Added to your favorite cereal

So including Strawberries in your daily food consumption can be a definite healthy choice. Maybe you are a regular with including this fruit in your diet or maybe not so much. Whatever the case I hope this finds you well and encourages you to at least begin a regimen to include.

Cauliflower-a formidable weight-loss agent

Cauliflower, that formidable weight-loss agent is a must to include in any meal plan. Have you tried?

How are you, friends? Hope you are doing good. I am well!

As a recap, for the last couple of post, I have presented information about my journey. My health and fitness journey.

Here, you will see that I’ve shared a few nuggets on why I changed my eating habits and adopted a structured physical fitness plan. If you search for my blog entitled “So why the change” I go into some depth as to why. Check it out here!

Cauliflower pronounced Cau·li·flow·er is a vegetable that is a member of the cruciferous family that includes broccoli, cabbage, kale, turnips, and host of others. It is white in color and develops as a combination of compacted florets(curd) as compared to broccoli.

 

Nutritionally, cauliflower comes as a surprise boasting a serious stat sheet. Normally, it is accepted that color in any fruit or vegetable signifies that item as being a definite producer in the fight against cancer, cardiovascular disease, and aging. Cauliflower is the exception.

Its stat sheet shows it to be high in Vitamin C, K, and Manganese. It is a serious producer of Folate and fiber too while being high in antioxidants and phytochemicals.

What makes Cauliflower different from its close sister broccoli is the fact that it contains sulfur-based compounds called Glucosinolates. There are a few and more in-depth study of them is ongoing. So far, these compounds are being regarded as formidable agents in the supporting good health.

Here’s what it brings to the game:

  1. Regulates Blood Cholesterol-Studies show that cauliflower helps to regulate cholesterol levels by binding cholesterol bile acids to pass into the intestines. Processed foods lack many of the essential properties that help to activate this.
  2. Improves digestionStudies show that sulforaphane found in the glucosinolates within cauliflower helps to remove the harmful bacteria within the stomach walls. This ultimately leads to improved digestion within the digestion tract. In addition, the fiber assists with more bulkier and softer stools as compared to watery or hard ones.
  3. Anti-cancer agent-In short, the Sulforaphane compounds released from the consumption of Cauliflower release additional compounds that assist with the binding away of cancer-causing agents. The properties help to control the harmful free radicals associated with degenerative diseases.
  4. Anti-Inflammatory helper-Cauliflower has Omega 3 fatty acids and a healthy amount of Vitamin C which help to inhibit an enzyme responsible for inflammation. It also has a few powerful anti-oxidants to boast. Cinnamic acid, ferulic acid, and quercetin are just a few to name that help to keep inflammation at bay. This ultimately leads to better circulation of blood and air passages.
  5. Aids in weight loss-Cauliflower is low in calories, low in sugar and high in fiber which makes for a nice combination to help one feel full. Definitely, need to add in any weight loss plan.

So what are the ways to consume Cauliflower:

  1. Sprinkled in and over salads
  2. Minced and stir-fried lightly-add in a dish of your choice.
  3. Pulverized in a Smoothie.
  4. Minced or quartered in a soup of your choice. The vegetable is my favorite.
  5. Add on a vegetable tray
  6. Hummus Dip
  7. Casseroles-all varieties

So there you have it! If you have not included this vegetable into your meal plan shame on you. This is definitely a go-to vegetable. Unless under doctors orders you have other instructions.

I know, I know! Its white, dry looking and admittedly not that appealing. I had to get over that too. It’s not that bad, though. Lol.

This is how I look at it. When I went through my change, of course, I had to change the way I thought. I had to reprogram the way I perceived eating ALL foods. So, I had to refocus on the nutritional benefits as opposed to the appearance. The taste buds could be manipulated. Haha!

Now, I will try almost anything.

If you fall into this, try your hand at expanding your food sources. You might be pleasantly surprised.

Cauliflower is a great addition to any meal plan. It is loaded with phytochemicals and antioxidants that help with everything from encouraging proper digestion in the gut area to encouraging good vascular circulation. Today, with the foods being processed and losing much of the anti-inflammatory properties, including Cauliflower into your meal plan is definitely a plus.

Arugula, the other green leaf is packed with beneficial nutrients. Include in your next spring mix salad.

Hello Friends! How are you? Hope all is well.

As promised, let’s continue on with sharing a few of the healthy foods I have adopted into my health and wellness plan.

If you need to catch up just do a search for “Why the Change” and you will quickly find my motivation for launching on this path of renewed health and wellness.

Staying consistent with the fruit and nutrient-packed vegetables that I now include on a regular basis, I introduce Arugula. pronounced [uh-roo-guh-luh].

Arugula is a green leafy vegetable that is apart of the Brassica family of cruciferous vegetables. It is in the family of vegetables that is likened to broccoli, bok choy, cabbage, kale, and Swiss chard.

It is a vegetable loaded with plenty of vitamins and minerals. Vitamins include Vitamin A, K, and C. The minerals include Folate acid, potassium, Manganese, Iron, and Calcium.

So what health benefits do you receive from eating Arugula?

  1. Weight Loss-since it is nutrient packed with minerals, vitamins and very low in calories, Arugula will meet ones nutritional and satiation needs. No need of feeling like your missing out on meeting those nutritional goals.
  2. Improves eyesight-Arugula being a good source of carotenoids, may help in improving eyesight. Carotenoids have been accepted as being agents for improving eyesight. Arugula is loaded with them. It is considered to be a positive agent against macular degeneration, an age-related condition involving the deterioration of parts of the eye.images-13
  3. Boost Immune system-Vitamin C is abundant in Arugula. It is linked to helping fight against the free radicals within the body. This can lead to helping support your immune system.
  4. Encourages heart health-Vegetables that are high in low calories and anti-inflammatory properties tend to be very good agents for protecting the heart. The anti-inflammatory properties encourage proper circulatory flow and consistent heart rhythms.
  5. Promotes Bone Health-In short, Arugula is a great source of vitamin K which is essential to maintaining strong bones. In some circles, it is a close second to Calcium.

Here are a few ideas on consuming Arugula

  1. In salads mixed with other types of greens.
  2. Used in soups to give it a healthy kick.
  3. Sprinkled atop Sandwiches to boost nutrition count.
  4. Spotted on (vegan style)pizzas. Yes, you have to try it.
  5. Pulverized in fruit and vegetable smoothies.
  6. Added as an edible side piece to vegetable dip trays.

I have tried it in all meal prep situations. My favorite is on sandwiches. I usually add a bit of herbs to give it a kick too. If you have included Arugula in your meal plan, excellent! It is a great addition. If you have not, then the opportunity is here. I would recommend it.

I definitely believe we are what we eat. If we consume high calorie, high fat, low fiber, empty calorie food the body will respond over time lethargically. On the contrast, if low fat, high fiber, nutrient dense foods are consumed the body will respond over time with vibrancy.

Stress? Fight or Flight Part II

Well, let’s get to it. For a recap, we discovered stress to be associated with that fight or fight feeling that one gets in a situation that seems unanswerable. Stress can also affect any and everyone.

Did you know that outside of relationships there are quite a few reasons to be stressed? In fact, according to the American Psychology Association, a study from 2007 to 2010 revealed money, work, the economy, and family responsibilities to be leading causes of stress.

Respondents point out that the pressures of responsibility in the workplace contribute to increased stress to meet deadlines. What’s interesting is in 2007 74% were affected as compared to a 5 to 6 percent drop over the next couple of years. Curiosity led me to find out that during the 2007 year in the U.S. there was a major housing bubble event. The stress connected with not having a home could be overwhelming.

Respondents also claimed earning money as the second reason stress is prevalent. Perhaps this is because of a combination of contributing factors stemming from either overindulgent personal desires or overall economics.

What are the symptoms of stress? As there are many causes of stress, there are quite a few symptoms that one may exhibit.

A lack of interest could be noticed in a person who customarily is involved. On the other hand, lack of appetite could be an obvious one. Especially when you know the person is quite fond of eating. Some individuals may experience common symptoms of having a headache or exhibiting fatigue. The attached survey highlights a few others of what percentage respondents experienced from the years 2007-2010.

So what are the long-term effects of stress if not managed? Well, the effects range from behavioral and physical.

Behavioral effects could range from one being depressed to serious anxiety attacks.

Stress if not managed properly could affect eating habits that lead to obesity. In some, sexual performance problems could be evident. Other extended issues might be related to skin, hair, intestinal, and menstrual.

So what can be done to help manage stress? Well, let’s see.

  • Support from loved ones-those close by(friends too) can be pillars in the time of stress offering mental, physical, and monetary support
  • Regular exercise-physical exercises can be a great way to take your focus off of stressful circumstance. Physical activity causes you to redirect your energies to whatever the task is at hand; Basketball, Pool, swimming, running, resistance training, or yoga.
  • Meditation-spending time just relaxing(quiet time) and mentally redirecting energies is a great way to reset your mind.
  • Listening to Music-Music is an ultimate mood changer. Music melodies have a way of soothing or energizing the mind. This can be an enjoyable way to be mentally massaged.
  • Reading-reading is a sure fire way to redirect your focus. In order to understand what you’re reading your mind has to be in the game.

So, there you go. Not a complete list but hopefully a decent informational teaser regarding stress.

Stress is definitely real and no laughing matter. With more expected out of an individual today in practically the same amount of hours in the day, one can feel overwhelmed. Stats show that situations have affected everyone across the globe, so adopting stress managing techniques will be a must.

Recapping, we found out that stress is that Fight or Flight feeling one gets when in a pressure type situation. Stress can affect anyone. It does not matter regarding gender, age, nationality, or status in life. We discussed some of the symptoms related to being stressful and the potential causes. It was revealed that stress, if not managed, can affect one mentally and have physical effects. Finally, incorporating stress management tools will help to relieve or even eradicate the impact of stress in one’s life.

I write this with the intention of motivating, encouraging or even reminding guys everywhere of the opportunity to show your lady that she is special. There is even a chance you can score points if you have been in the doghouse or on the edge of being in the game.

Let me first note that Valentine’s Day should not be the only day we make a move to express love to a lady. It should be a day as all other days if we are sincere and have shown affection occasionally. This means everyday love should be expressed in a way that she ultimately knows that she is loved.  Whether you periodically send flowers or post sticky love notes she should always know she is the center of your love. Even if there was not a Valentine’s Day. Sadly, Valentine’s Day is just that. A reminder to show some form of affection to that special person.

So to help us out guys, I have put together a reminder checklist to guide us away from the dreadful dog house.

Remember to periodically express occasionally before Valentine’s Day:

  • Show affection daily; maybe a passionate hug, kiss on the ear, or sensual touch.
  • Listen intently to her.
  • Periodically take her out to dinner; not just on Valentine’s Day.
  • Make her laugh; tell those corny jokes!
  • Comment positively on her features.
  • Occasionally take her out; anywhere. Concert, play, park
  • Send freaky text from time to time
  • Play games with her; card, video, or game board style
  • Go away on a romantic vacation somewhere.
  • Send flowers periodically.
  • Pay for her to be pampered; hair done, manicure, pedicure.
  • Mail an affectionate card.
  • Rub her feet from time to time.
  • Make her bath water.
  • Surprise her with a makeup kit

Then when Valentines Day does arrive do

  • Any of the above

 

This will result in her knowing she is loved on a daily basis as opposed to thinking it takes a special day. Of course, I have only noted a few points to keep the romance brewing, so if there are others certainly include and share in the comments section.

I, like many, have had to deal with stress at some point. Whether personal or business stress can affect anyone. Just recently a business related issue concerning an employee invited stress into my environment where there was a chance for me to be affected but with proper stress normalizing measures I did not allow it to fester. In this case, its effect was minimized pretty quickly.

There are many folks who encounter stress at some point and have had to endure for a much longer time. This is why I decided to share a bit about what it is and how it can affect one physically and mentally. In the next few post I will share what stress is, who is affected by stress, when can stress surface, what are the contributors to stress, what are the long-term side effects of stress, and how does stress affect one. Afterwards,  I will present options that may help overcome stress.

Let me first start off and say that I am not a doctor of any sorts but a living example on a journey sharing my story.

First, what is stress? Well, it is kinda the feeling you get when your heart races, your blood pressure elevates, your breathing quickens, and your muscles tighten. This feeling is commonly referred to as the “Fight or Flight” and you may or may not encounter this depending on your level of stress endurance. This fight or fight feeling varies from one person to another.

For the one person missing a paycheck may cause them to panic while for another it is viewed as just another aspect of that particular work environment.  In another instance, adding another project with a deadline can possibly invite panic to the one employee but for the other employee, it can be viewed as just another opportunity to tackle a challenge. Stress can also, undoubtedly affect anyone.

Stress has affected children, teens, adults, men, women, young and older persons. Its effect can surface in various ways in all too. For instance, someone who normally is outgoing could begin to be a bit reserved. This can happen across race, gender, or age.

The graphs show that stress appears to affect all age groups and gender. In some way, that fight or flight feeling impacts the mind and does not discriminate. In another instance, one who generally handles seemingly small situations could suddenly begin to be bothered and moody.

Trends show that stress is a very real problem that even touches down to the core of the family affecting children. In this case, children like adults are affected in varying ways that can result in the child being reserved, quiet, non-playful, sad, or even frustrated.

In this post, I have sorta laid the basis for what stress is, what the symptoms of stress are, and who is affected by stress. In the next post, I will focus on what the causes of stress are, the mental and physical impact of stress and what the long-term effects on an individual that does not overcome.

So what’s in your tool bag. You know, just as a mechanic…

So what’s in your tool bag. You know, just as a mechanic has a variety of tools in his tool bag to handle the jobs of working on a vehicle. Each tool is designed for a specific purpose and function. Sometimes the tools are used in the same time frame in order to tackle a specific job. Other times only one tool is used.

So, I ask again, what’s in your tool bag that helps you manage to navigate through life’s hurdles. Listed below are a few life tools that I believe are a must for anyone who needs to endure and overcome.

It is important to note that these tools can be used for any aspect of life where challenges may be encountered. Just as a mechanic can use his tools on just about any make and model vehicle, life’s tools can be too.

So shall we look into this tool bag? Let’s see what we have here.

  1. Laughter-Accepting laughter in your life will make a world of difference. Life can bring serious challenges sometimes that can take a physical toll on an individual. In this case, there needs to be an outlet. Some use drugs. Others use alcohol. A few try laughter. Laughter can offer great benefits. Studies show that when one laughs there are endorphins released that help one feel good and ultimately shift your focus off of whats stressful. The act of laughter helps one to keep their focus off of the circumstance and on the enjoyment of what makes him laugh. Who knew? Besides this, laughter is free and doesn’t cost anything.   2. Faith-Faith is kinda like the milk added to a recipe for a cake. It helps to blend all the ingredients. You need faith in just about anything that is done. It is so interwoven that some things we handle in life are just accepted and not seen as faith in action. For example, it is assumed that after going to sleep one will wake up the next day. Do you just expect to wake? If you are in good health you may not think of this much, but if sickly the thought of not waking may enter frequently. What about venturing out to start a business. Does one just go for it? Or is one apprehensive? Either way, faith is still there. For the one, it is great for the other not so great. The point here is that at the core one must believe in order to give, get, or advance. What’s your choice?
  3. Doubt-The opposite of faith is doubt or unbelief. Unlike just giving up and accepting doubt wholeheartedly, there is healthy doubt. Let’s say you want to make a significant purchase that directly affects your household and has the potential to affect the cash flow. The purchase at first, may appear daunting and lead to doubt but when diligence is spent investigating every option a way may be seen that was not seen before. This is healthy doubt in action. Some may call it caution. In the end, pointed and diligent time is spent leading to an informed decision instead of a guess.
  4. Love-Love is essential in any toolbox of life. Love can be likened to that go-to tool which is always used. When there is a tough job this tool will always be used at some point. In life, love will face and deal with many of the selfish vibes encountered. Love helps a mother endure the entanglements of drugs she witnesses her child caught in. Love also causes that person to speak up and offer constructive words of encouragement when a friend is observed making decisions that will ultimately lead them to destroy themselves. If there is a definite go-to tool Love is that tool.
  5. Peace-Peace has to definitely be apart of the tool bag. Just imagine going to a library where there is a constant noise. One would find it difficult to concentrate and study on the topic at hand. Peace is that tool which helps to bring a bit of sanity to a situation. Embracing this characteristic will allow for all issues to be addressed without any noise. Professional teams address the issue of noise. Team members are trained to perform with one goal in mind; that of performing to reach the ultimate goal. So, if a team member introduces issues other than what the goal of the team is, it is addressed. That could mean being released from the team or just a sit-down talk. The issue can be looked at as noise detrimental to the entire team reaching their goal. Atmospherically, noise also can be likened to a calm sunny day versus a blustery cloudy day. There are just some things you can do on a sunny day that you would think twice about on a blustery cloudy day. Accepting peace as part of ones nature will most assuredly offer level thought to any situation.

This is most definitely not a complete list. Just as there are many mechanics there are a variety of persons. Each having their own set of tools. This is ok. Use what works to get that car, truck, furnace, air condition, or boat, fixed.

Let’s get to it, shall we?

  1. Increased bone density-You may have heard this at some point. Exercise helps to increase bone density. What’s the big deal about this? Well, as we get older we age. Just as a home, a car, or a stamping machine parts begin to wear out. We can prolong its operation though through good maintenance. When it comes to our bodies, the same is true. A study conducted in 2000 showed there was a slight increase in bone mineral density in subjects that engaged in High-intensity routines.  The bones, in particular, can lose bone density as time passes. This loss can be combated against though through good maintenance. A well-balanced eating plan and exercise are key. Studies have shown that with resistance training specifically bone density was increased. The graph shows the relationship between age and bone mass. As one ages, the bone mass changes also. Physical fitness routines help the body respond positively, meaning muscles grow, oxygen is circulated, and bones are strengthened.

2.  Develops goal setting-If you feel you are one that has a hard time accomplishing anything, having a workout and eating plan is a sure way to get started. Meal and workout plans are offered by a variety of companies who can customize them for the individual. Getting help here is crucial if you are serious about changing your position and reaching your goal. Once these tools are offered all one has to do is accept the change mentally. All else will fall into place. Goal reached!

3.  Expand socially-If you have a fear of being around crowds and others, having a gym membership can start you on the path of being socially mature. Accepting a gym membership is an important part of any workout plan. Unless you workout at home having a gym membership is the way to go. You can immediately meet others who are enduring the same challenges. The similarities of others fitness journey can be a sure fire way to gain friends.

4.  Increases strength and flexibility-Are you feeling weak in areas or not as flexible as you once were? Fitness routines can definitely help you achieve this goal. Stretching regularly reinforces flexibility. Adding weights to any workout plan helps. The trick here is that one does not have to start out with a lot of weight. Generally one tends to overdo it and quickly becomes discouraged trying to lift too much weight. Always start off with a low manageable weight that encourages proper form. As your body responds( muscle definition, fat loss, increased strength, flexible joints, mental endurance, energized cardio) you will automatically adjust the resistance to meet the challenge.

5.   Increases confidence-So your confidence is low. You’ve gained more weight than expected. Your annual checkup revealed a few health issues directly related to behaviors that put one at risk. This is an all too common scenario which can be changed by one’s attitude. When one accepts a plan to change the condition of their health, meal and fitness plans follow. Over time with discipline, mental and physical results become visible. One becomes mentally energized with an awareness to choosing better foods that are nutritionally packed. One’s physical appearance changes. Through disciplined workouts, the body is looking leaner from the loss of fat and building of muscle. This combination mentally motivates the individual and builds confidence. Ultimately replacing doubt and shyness present before the transformation.

So, investing in your health for 2018 is promising! Never let doubt hinder you from at least trying. You will never know how far you can travel if you never go out. My hope is that these words of encouragement serve you well.

Investing in New Year Health Resolutions? Expect Benefits!

Hello friend!

The New Year is here and if you are like many it is a good time to kinda reset and reevaluate life.

Many have decided to travel more, some have decided to engage in more social activities, and others have decided to better their health. Whatever the personal attention-getter it is always good to reevaluate to make things better. Even companies do it year to year so that in the end there is a better product or service. Thank goodness!

Bettering one’s health always ranks high when it comes to reevaluating yearly goals. The graph above highlights the increase in obesity rates since the 1960s and the concern. Today, when it comes to nutrition the typical American diet exceeds the recommended intake or limits when it comes to calories from added sugars, refined grains, sodium, and saturated fat.

When relating to exercise research shows that some states report adults exercising 3 or more times a week for at least 30 minutes while other states lag behind.  A National average for adults exercising was 51.6%.

With stats like these, it is easy to see why many today have a concern for their health. There is also no shortage of companies that promote eating, exercise, and diet plans.

The point is that eating well and having a routine fitness plan can yield great physical and mental benefits. Following, I have compiled a list of benefits one is to expect after accepting an eating and fitness plan. There are so many that I will have to post in two parts. The following statement should be personally vocalized.

So, this year because I have decided to exercise more and eat better I will see:

  1. Boost Energy-Have you ever met that person that seems to always be tired and unmotivated. After questioning, are they active or more of a couch potato? Chances are they are the later. Physical activity increases blood flow, raises heart rate levels and metabolism.  This will easily combat any sluggishness.

  1. Builds Perseverance-This is a definite mental boost for someone who may struggle with giving up on things. Workout plans are generally personalized. One thing that is common amongst all levels is the attitude to persevere. No matter what age or level of fitness one must learn to persevere and overcome in order to reach their fitness goal.
  2. Lose Weight-This is generally accepted and widely known but just in case you did not get the memo here is a simple explanation. Imagine filling a car up with gas. It takes 10 gallons(37.8 liters). This is what it takes to run it. Let’s say you try to pump 15 gallons(56.8 liters). It will not take it because the tank is full. The excess will not be used. In the same sense, our bodies function at a base amount of calories. Consuming them will maintain the bodies functions. When more calories are consumed than what is normal, those calories unlike the gas that cannot be received in a car will be received by the body. Once received the body will more than likely store as excess fat. If nothing is done to alter this routine the excess calories will build and build and build. Yikes-weight gain! Knowing the foods and their calorie content help to defend against unwanted calories. Taking in fewer calories or burning them up(exercising) will help maintain. So important to become familiar with this aspect of nutrition.
  3. Reduces Heart Disease-Today, this is a familiar banner. It encompasses any disease of the blood vessels that affect the heart, veins, brain, valves, or extremities. According to the World Health Organization, this is the number one cause of death globally. Routine exercising and healthy eating help to minimize the risk.
  4. Calorie Control-Knowing the number of calories one consumes is extremely important. Too many can cause excess weight issues. Getting help in developing a plan to target foods that provide good calories and minimizing the excess will be a sure fire way to having control over weight concerns.

So, to wrap up part 1 of Reevaluating the New Year fitness plan a few things to take away. First, remember to educate yourself. There is plenty of information today-health professional, doctor, internet, YouTube, friends, and the library. Second, stay encouraged! We generally tend to have a goal set and expect change overnight. Hmmm? Not so and unrealistic through simple workout routines. Remember our situation did not happen overnight, it took time. So be patient! Thirdly, connect with others who are experiencing a fitness change too. This can be an invaluable source of encouragement if you begin doubting.

Welcome! Happy New 2018 Year

The New Year ushers in expectancy…I share two things to be expectant of

Happy New Year All! 2018 is here!

Hope you all had a wonderful time celebrating and you did it safely.

The year 2017 was definitely an eventful one. Personally, I am thankful! I learned a little more about myself in areas I need improvement. I was shown I need to be a better listener. Too much talking can cloud what one needs to hear and receive.

I learned to accept being patient. There is a divine word that says, “patience is a virtue!” Definitely truth! I thought about past times where I could not just fathom patiently waiting for anything or whatever to happen. Such an in mature way to view life. After many trials, I am continuing to learn and accept patience as second nature. Yay!

I found that in just these two areas alone if accepted and adhered to one can learn much about living a joyous, fruitful and productive life. Thank goodness!

So with entering the 2018 New Year, I have to tell you I am expectant and excited. Expectant because I have planted seeds in 2017 that I am looking forward to growing in 2018.

I have planted seeds for individual development. One that I share periodically is maintaining a productive fitness program. My goodness, so glad I started this! I began around Easter of last year and have seen a steady progression in inches, feel, and look. My look has changed cause I’m losing inches around my midsection. I feel wonderful! The lost inches help me model my clothes with confidence. Haha! And it all just looks good now. Hehe!

I started blogging friends! Yay! It has been a wonderful experience I tell ya. Meeting all of you has expanded my friend base as well as helped me to see aspects of this life from a variety of perspectives. Thank you for sharing!

That being said, the whole social media environment has been a learning experience for me. I consider myself to be a private person so as I was introduced to the social media environment I had to learn to break my shell. So glad I did! Yay! I was caught between having a desire to share my passion for encouraging others or keep it all pent up and not share. Geesh! So glad I was encouraged to break the shell and share.

So entering into 2018 I plan on continuing the fitness journey and meeting more fellow bloggers. I hope your New Year is full of joy and just as good or better than the last. Again I wish everyone a Happy and Productive New 2018 Year.

Christmas Eve Get Together 2017

Although Christmas has passed, as promised, I wanted to share the experience of this years’ Christmas Eve get together.

A few years back the idea of having one was only talked about and after a little bit of persuasion, the wish was granted. Let me tell you, it has been a hit and this year was definitely better than the last. Why you ask? Well, there was plenty of good food, interesting games, and new faces.

Outside of a traditional meal of roasted beef or turkey, colorful vegetables, delicious casseroles, and eye-popping desserts the menu is toned back to more of a sporting environment. The menu consisted of buffalo chicken tacos, hot wings and a beef and potato stew. Simply delicious and satisfying! Yum yum! Christmas Day the aforementioned menu was eaten. Haha.

Games are always fun! One game that is a highlight is the Saran Wrap Ball game. One simply buys plenty of trinkets to wrap in layers with saran wrap plastic. The size of the ball is determined by how many trinkets are wrapped. What’s wrapped can be candy, gift cards, pencils, pens, or even a notepad.  The catch is one has to use cooking mittens to unwrap the ball in 30 seconds. Several turns by everyone will ultimately shrink the ball. Hilarious! It will sure get all involved.

The new game can involve up to 8 people or more. It is called Fact or Crap. The game consists of cards with questions that are either fact or crap. Each player gets tokens and depending on whether your answer to the question is fact or crap determines whether you increase your tokens or give them up. Gotta know your stuff about this game. Plenty of guessing too. The winner will be the one with the most chips. By the way, I was the first to depart the game due to no tokens. Bummer! The winner that ran away with the game was the youngest of us all. A 7th grader who was not only a good guesser but remembered many of the historical notes taught in school. Awesome!

Finally, this year brought in a new friend to the group. A very close friend of mine married and his wife enjoyed the get-together. He texted me later that evening and noted they had a blast. Very encouraging. There were also a few young additions to the family that enjoyed the food, gifts, and camaraderie.

Well, that’s it! I hope I did not bore you. This was special for me because there was a time I was not involved in anything like this. Very Thankful. I will be looking forward to next year.

It’s Christmas Day

Hello Friends! 

So how was this years’ Christmas for ya? Did you get out of it what you expected? Well, I hope it went as you so desired.

So how was this years’ Christmas for ya? Did you get out of it what you expected? Well, I hope it went as you so desired.

Christmas time is definitely one of my better holidays. I personally love the atmosphere of giving that surrounds it.  Although I do not get as many gifts as I was when in my youth, haha, I still love this time of year. The atmosphere just presents the right conditions to be unselfish and think of someone else. I personally use this time of year to give cards to employee families that express my thanks and gratitude for their invaluable contribution to the team.

I love the lights. I have seen so many nice decorations. Many have decorated their homes and offices so nice with color and designs. One design showed the entire house being decorated with the focal point being a 50 ft lighted archway as you approached the door. So magnificent!

I love the celebrations. History will prove that this time of year spurs on many celebrations. Many celebrate their cultures existence, some celebrate just to celebrate, and others celebrate the birth of Christ.

I had the chance to go to a Chinese Lantern Festival. Wow. Nice! Love the food, designs, color, and history. Definitely, a must see if you have not experienced.

I love the food. This is kind of a given to me. Although I love to eat any time of the year,  Christmas time presents a couple of season-specific treats. There are the good old egg-nog and Gingerbread cookie.

Of course, there is roasted turkey, Christmas ham, plenty of veggie trays, a mix of casseroles, and a plethora of desserts. Whatever offered I can tell you I am usually game to eat. This year as part of a pre-Christmas Day bash, Buffalo chicken dip, taco salad and green bean potato soup were on the list.  So good! I’m sure I went over my calories for the day. Haha!

Although this is a time of remembering to not be selfish one does not have to feel guilty of not getting something for everyone.

If you have the means then do so, but if you are like many, do what you are led to do. Give to those who are friends, family, and to that special person you do not know. Give a card or simply say how much that person means to you.

Sometimes our heart to give can be bigger than the means to do so. If so, do not fret! Stay within your means and know that it is the motivation that counts.

The season is a time to reflect and bring into remembrance what was done by The Almighty. The SON Jesus was born into the world and provided a means for all to follow. A SPIRIT of giving and sacrifice. In the same sense the giving of life and sacrifice is what man is given an opportunity to do. Doing so on a daily basis plants seeds that are more memorable and everlasting.

It is a simple reminder that every day is an opportunity for us to shine before others. Whether that is by a smile, providing a ride, offering food, sharing a kind word, taking low in a situation, or giving money we all have an opportunity to sparkle.

I know it can be difficult sometimes especially if handling personal issues or better yet dealing with someone who is selfish thinking.

Know that, accepting the mind that I am an overcomer will help keep your focus off of non-productive soul draining thoughts. Remember mission statements by companies are written as a guide for them to keep a focus on. All actions(decisions) within the company are made to reinforce “The Mission”.

That being said, this is definitely a time of year to sparkle. With all the lights and colors glistening one is sure to put a smile on their face and feel warm and cozy within about the season.

In the same sense, we are to provide that appealing light and cozy effect that will have someone proclaim “WoW! They had such a Sparkle about them!”

Just putting a reminder out there that there has been a time set aside for all of us to reflect. Reflect on what, you say? On life and how we are impacting or are being impacted by it.

Thanksgiving, established centuries ago and depending on your culture has always been a time to be thankful and celebrate the years’ harvest. Whether from a biblical approach or pilgrim approach mankind has always taken the time out to just appreciate having sustenance and making it through another year.

So it is present day and mankind is still carrying on the tradition. In America, it is celebrated in November for a couple of days and a time when families come together and enjoy a great feast.

For some, it can be a challenge to come together due to work-related responsibilities or family stress. Whatever the circumstance. Happy Thanksgiving is the charge given to us all.

We have all come from many walks of life and for some, more eventful than others. Whatever the path, we can all find something to be thankful for.

It won’t happen overnight​

Hello everybody! So, with any journey, there are things you learn along the way. There will be highs and there will be lows but the main goal is to keep your focus on the prize and keep chugging along the way. 

When it comes to keeping fitness goals it is extremely important to understand that reaching a particular fitness goal will not happen overnight.

When it comes to keeping fitness goals it is extremely important to understand that reaching a particular fitness goal will not happen overnight.

So many of us falsely believe this to be the case. Especially when effort in exercising and time devoted to a specific meal plan is given. We inherently expect that the time just spent exercising will somehow automatically melt away those extra pounds and yield the proportionally aesthetic body achieved by others.

We fail to realize that it will take time to reach a specific fitness goal. Especially if extremely out of shape. We have to accept that it is with time and patience that we will ultimately better our condition and see the desired change. It is so easy to give up after only spending a short time working toward a fitness goal. The reality is we have to understand that time, patience, and dedication are needed.

I know because I personally experienced the feelings of failure and regret after not really putting forth a commitment to change. The failure that I did not stay in the grind of the week in and week out exercise routines. And regret that when the opportunity was there to devote time for fitness I never took full advantage.

Now, the mindset has changed and I am completely sold out to the lifestyle. For me, eating more fruits and vegetables and consuming less of foods high in fat helps me to feel energized and fresh each day. Learning more about how certain foods impact the human body help me to make wiser food choices. Accepting the fact that patience is key helps me know that I am closer to my fitness goal than the day before.

Sure, there were days when I questioned the process. Especially when I had a great workout the day before and did not see the expected physical change. Boy doubt definitely crept in!

But looking to others for motivation helped me to overcome! Yay!!!!

So, if you are in this predicament here are a few suggestions I believe will help you to keep your focus and stay the course toward your fitness goals.

  1. Know that you are not alone – there are many others that have to deal with the same struggles of being consistent day to day in reaching their fitness goals.
  2. Determine what your fitness goals are for you only – Understand others can encourage but only “YOU” can make it happen. Personalize those goals and own them!
  3. Develop a meal regimen – With any positive fitness goals paying attention to food consumption is a must. What you eat as well as when you eat is extremely important. Owning up to this will positively yield visible fitness results.
  4. Surrounding yourself with positivity – Just as there are focus groups for certain initiatives surround yourself with others that encourage the fitness lifestyle who can identify with the struggles.
  5. Devote time – the fitness lifestyle needs time. Make time for it. When we accepted the previous lifestyle we gave most of the time to it. Time devoted to the fitness lifestyle is a must.
  6. Read fitness material – spending time on websites that promote fitness and reading fitness material helps to educate and build your fitness IQ. Feed your mind with positive fitness material whether it be YouTube, a magazine, or a specific website.
  7. See yourself meeting those fitness goals – With any successful company, there is a mission statement. That mission statement helps to guide the company. Meaning all teams, districts, divisions, departments, and regions develop a plan to promote the overall company’s mission. Do the same! Develop a mission statement that says “I will promote and encourage fitness for me. I will read to educate myself, I will eat foods that encourage a healthy heart and promote clear mental thinking. I will reach my fitness goals by spending time exercising.

Although this is not a complete list, these are just a few suggestions to help you lock it down when it comes to meeting your fitness goals.

I do want to mention I am no professional but one that shares and encourages a positive life and health experience in others.

This follow-up post provides an option that can be used when a relationship, whether a friend or family, is strained by the possibility of leaving due to work-related duties.

This follow-up post provides an option that can be used when a relationship, whether a friend or family, is strained by the possibility of leaving due to work-related duties.

So this third submission may take a bit of creativity! Let me explain.

You know how it is when day to day you see your friends or family member while doing whatever it is you do. If that is at work then day to day you go to work and fulfill your duties. I would assume this is common since most have some sort of means to keep the income flowing.

You rise and get ready. You travel to wherever it is you go. A service is performed and then you travel back. When you get back to your home there is something different. You find a gift! It may be flowers? Or an affectionate card?

Have you ever been the recipient of such affection? If so then you know the psychological effects.

Keeping the relationship interesting instead of the monotonous day to day activities offers a consistent spark that affects the psyche. Whether dealing with a friend, a family member, or a partner keeping things interesting is essential.

Below are a few ways to keep a relationship fresh and intriguing!

Keeping it interesting means one:

  1. Keeps the relationship lively.
  2. Keeps it feeling fresh and unique.
  3. Keeps all parties feeling special.
  4. Defends off the wandering mind.
  5. Promotes a consistent passionate state of mind.

How to keep interesting you ask?? Well, try these.

  1. Speak affection Often but not Overly done! Say how much the other means to you personally.
  2. Send affection attention items! Flowers, a nice card, an affectionate text, or a selfie picture.
  3. Have a mind to always show interest. Distance should not dampen the affection between you both.
  4. Use technology to send passionate notes.
  5. Note on a calendar the time of a “call” date.

These and others are just a few ideas that can keep the physical distance between friends and family seem nonexistent.

Not to be overlooked and more importantly is never forget to invest in the relationship by putting forth the effort of thoughtful time.

The thoughtful time spent will keep it all the more interesting!

Launch

How many times have you heard this? You can do whatever you set your mind to do! Well, I believe we all have at some point during our growing years heard this from those who are the closest to us.

I can hear parents encouraging their kids to press and believe in whatever you set out to do.

If it is a doctor then be it, if you choose to be an astronaut then do it if that is what you choose to do.

These words can easily be replaced with the emphatic word Launch“!

Do whatever you set your mind to do. There will be obstacles and times that make you think twice about going after your dream but if you set your mind to do it over time it will come to fruition.

I can hear a parent giving the analogy of what it takes for the successful Launch” of a spaceship into outer space.

Well, son/daughter, there is much preparation that goes into the successful Launch of a spaceship.

  1. The astronauts have to go through training for the difference in atmospheric pressure which will affect their body weight.
  2. The astronauts have to train eating a different food for sustenance while in outer space.
  3. The astronauts have to train to handle the workload because of the difference in atmospheric pressure.

These points and others would be referenced to the child in order to give a picture of what would be needed and expected.

The parent would explain that just as the astronaut needs to train in preparation for the difference in atmospheric pressure, he likewise should train expecting that there will be obstacles to overcome while on the pursuit of his/her goal.

The parent will also note that your trials will be unique for you! Just as the astronauts’ food is uniquely made for consumption and sustenance the trials and test you endure will better prepare you for success.

Lastly, the parent would note that while on your pursuit expect the workload to be challenging! Because of the responsibility and weight of the job you must train to handle it.

Remember a lot goes into a successful Launch!

You have what it takes, just set your mind to it.

Separation?Hmmm?? Communication is Key!

Communication is vital in any connection. Just think about it. In order to know what another is doing or for them to know what you are doing, a line of communication must be maintained.

This reminds me of  the old cup and string trick. First there is a medium by which communication is made possible and at least two people on either end. Audible tones are then able to be sent via the cups and string arrangement.

In much the same fashion an individual has to continue communication with others, whether family or friends. It can be too easy to focus on the job and lose site of the fact that because you are no longer there physically you can be easily forgotten. The old adage of “Out of site out of mind” can quickly be a reality if not defended against.

Communicating is a sure fire way of maintaining interest. Whether through phone or internet a way can be made.

Technology today has opened the door for there to be more ways of communicating compared to just the use of the telephone of old days.

Here are just a few:

  1. Emailing friends and family is good way to keep in the know. There is a bit of privacy here along with a chance to write out  any details. This can be handy when handling upcoming engagements that require details. The best advantage it offers is speed. Regular mail can have a serious lag in time which can thwart plans if time sensitive information is needed.
  2. Regular mail is an oldie but goodie trusted system. If time is not important then this is the way to go. Details can be written out and it offers a bit of privacy.
  3. Using social media- This has definitely increased in popularity over the last ten years. This form of communication offers lots of benefits. Not only can a message be sent to one person but several in a group if chosen. This medium allows for pictures and video clips to be sent too. The main advantage here also is the speed at which information can be sent. Almost in realtime friends and love ones can enjoy seeing messages and video clips quickly.
  4. The use of the cell phone. Cell phones as with computers are in just about every home today. This means as technology has grown individuals across the world are more likely to own or have a cell phone. This quickly translates into making a quick call to a friend or family to keep them updated as to “what’s going on in their world!”. The advantage here is that calls can be made quickly.

Of course these are the obvious forms of communication. If any are missed please feel free to add.

So with any separation the challenge is there to maintain as best as possible some normalcy to the situation that affects all involved.

Communication is definitely a key component in helping all parties achieve that.

Relocating? Don’t fret! Its all in a good plan.

So have you ever had to move away from familiar surroundings due to job related responsibilities?

I mean having to relocate and leave behind those who are familiar and dear to you.

Although this may seem far fetch to some, today this is an all too common scenario.

Today, companies are expanding due to business ventures and in some cases require employees to relocate for a bit to ensure the company gets a foot hold wherever they are.

If this is your case don’t fret. Here are a few tips that can help you stay connected and still feel apart of the family.

In the coming month I will suggest in a four part weekly series ideas to help you feel connected, maintain communication, and keep focus.

Relocating for however long for one can be nerve racking. This can be doubly stressful when family is involved. The pressure is even elevated when there is no plan. Just as with any task or venture a good plan is a must. This is why!

A good plan covers:

  1. What your dealing with now?
  2. How you plan to address the issue if any?
  3. Where do you plan to go?
  4. How do you plan to achieve the goal?
  5. Who is going to be affected and
  6. When do you accept the decision?

Think of it this way. When a business wants to expand there is much preplanning. A detailed financial analysis is conducted to determine whether the expansion will be worth it. So all associated cost are assessed, a site visit is conducted, and a competitor analysis is reviewed. This of course is just a few of the criteria used to validate the expansion. Every company has its formula.

Now, in much the same fashion one must conduct this sort of analysis to come up with a plan. One has to:

  1. Determine whether the move will financially increase the position.
  2. Assess all costs associated with the move.
  3. Involve others who have made a similar move to garner related information.
  4. Investigate site to assess any concerns.
  5. What are the native cost of living concerns.

There are of course other questions but these are enough to get the ball rolling in developing a plan.

Spend time with your family or friends and talk about it. Getting all concerns out on the table helps to address any potential issues.

Remember this is a decision that impacts not only you but others who are tied to you financially. So, being open and honest as well as welcoming all thoughts can make an otherwise stressful event more accepting.

For some, this time of year is what they have been waiting for, especially after dealing with the extreme heat and humidity of the summer. The relief of the weather alone can be exciting.

Others are excited cause this time of year brings special memories. These memories may bring to light special family engagements or unique friendship moments.

What makes this time of year fun for you? Is it

  • The changing weather. Imagining the cooler nights?
  • Schools back in? Oh Oh, this might or might not be.
  • The changing color of the leaves?
  • The advent of certain professional or amateur competitive sports?
  • The onset of October and pumpkin fever?
  • Certain foods for the time of the year?

I find it to be an interesting time of the year because of how nature reacts. Have you noticed the trees beginning to shed? What about the leaves? This time of the year reminds me that winter is coming.

Although I am personally giddy about the previously mentioned list, the chill in the night air lets me know that winter is around the corner. Not that I am excited about winter but the time reminds me that I need to address a few winter prep items.

  1. Is the car winterized (tires, right fluids)?
  2. Is the yard pretreated against weeds for the upcoming next year?
  3. If you have a home, is it winterized? The furnace working properly? Certain winter foods stored for the times’ bad weather immobilizes you?
  4. Proper winter clothing? Does it need to be addressed?

As a special note, I do not want to be insensitive to those of you who have lost loved ones around this time. Words cannot fully express the sadness of your loss. It is with the utmost respect that I write this.

Enamored! Really?? It’s a matter of perspective.

It is difficult to be enamored in anything today; especially life. This could easily be the statement made by someone today given the current world conditions. The question is from what perspective is one making the statement?  Is it from a well to do background or from one that is not so great? 

It is difficult to be Enamored in anything today; especially life. This could easily be the statement made by someone today given the current world conditions. The question is, from what perspective is one making the statement?  Is it from a well to do background or from one that is not so great?

Is it from a well to do background? You know, the lifestyle where one practically has anything that is wanted at their fingertips. If it is so desired it will be had. Procuring the funds to have that which is desired is no obstacle.

The not so great background may come with some challenges. Challenges, where the money to procure things, may not be as available.

So, Enamored ??.………It depends on your perspective.

Let’s not think that being in the position of well to do is all that fabulous. It comes with its own challenges.

  • others(family) expecting you to give hand outs because you are in that position
  • hard work to get there??? Do others know about that???
  • the effort spent in maintaining the business(position) against competition, fraud, taxes.

For the not so great background, things may appear more obvious.

  • living from paycheck to paycheck
  • basic health care and sustenance for the family
  • a system that inherently relegates a people to a predetermined lower social position.

As you can see, although the position encompasses different circumstances one can still have an objection.

In the end, one simply has to be an overcomer to be Enamored enamored in anything. Although

different circumstances but in a way, the same, one must overcome a challenge, an

obstacle or anything that may be a mountain. Only then can one be Enamored in the things of this life.

Magnetic! Who KNEW!

Who knew? So many things where the opposite attracts. Take for instance the mallard ducks. The female duck is not as colorful as the male but designed for a  purpose.

Of course, we know of the North and South Pole how the opposite poles allow for magnetic energy to flow which in effect manipulate earthly weather patterns.

Let’s not forget about male and female and the differences that open the door for there to be an attraction or shall I say something magnetic.

What is it about being magnetic? Well from just a few examples:

1. there is a difference in physical make up

2. there is a purpose in not being the same

3. the opposites have a connection

The female mallard has been designed with a color that is low-key and helps her to be camouflaged from any enemies.

Outside of the The North and South Pole being physically opposite of one another the unseen electromagnetic field connection help to stabilize global systems.

And of course, the opposite attraction between a male and female provide for offspring that increase the population.

So the magnetic attraction of opposites can be obvious.

Stay True to your GOAL!

we’ve all been there

Hello, All! So check this out! Every day the goal is to provide a pleasant and delightful experience to anyone that may cross your path. No matter who or what one may encounter the goal should be to be an encouragement. At least this is my personal goal.

That being said, do you ever find that to be difficult. I mean to focus daily on being that person who provides a positive experience for all who cross your path. Besides conquering one’s own challenges, the task can be disheartening when the benefactor does not seem to benefit.

I know we have all been there. Providing positive guidance every day to all including the individual that obviously needs special attention. I mean it is that individual who kinda rubs everyone the wrong way.

Every day is about them! Their whole thought process is focused on not togetherness but individualism. When you encounter them the conversation is always centered around not assuming responsibility for issues but blaming others. It can definitely be disheartening. Especially when all available help has been afforded to the person.

One of the most gratifying things in life is to be in a position to help others and see that help benefit someone. That help can be a word of enlightenment, assisting in a move from one location to another, encouragement in reaching a goal or getting through a test, a warning to a particular bad behavior exhibited that could lead down a bad path, or simply motivating someone to have a good morning. The benefits afterward can be quite rewarding!

At the end of the day, I guess it can be said that staying true to yourself is what matters. If you know you have done all to provide a thoughtful positive experience to whomever, you can be at peace.

Sometimes we just need a reset!

Welcome back! So, I had some trouble with my phone and after asking a few questions during my investigation it led me to guess what? A reset!! Who would’ve thought just a simple reset of the phone would help clear the issue. Well, I did not but I understand the concept. For those who may not follow I’m referring to the action of just powering down and powering back up of any device. In this case my phone.

What I am referring to is that through this life there will be times we just need a reset. Life for some can bring a variety of challenges ranging from managing food, navigating family concerns, dealing with medical circumstances, and overcoming substance abuse. Whatever the challenge one must find a way to reset.

The need to reset kinda goes like this. When my phone acted up I could not get the touch sensor to respond. It sorta froze up to where it would not respond. No matter the length of time I gave it to recover there was no response. This is sort of the same thing that happens to a computer when it does not respond after may be opening too many applications and performing too many operations too quickly.

Well, if this happens the solution many times is to give it a hard reset meaning the device has to be turned off and then back on. When this happens, the internal device operating programs are given a chance to realign themselves. This, in turn, causes most of the time the remaining sub programs to follow suit. Kinda like puzzle pieces that fit together properly.

Knowing this, the mind can be introduced to lots of information. Productive and encouraging things as well as non-productive and negative things. The challenge is to remain focused and on point to that positive goal which has been set. Over time there is a chance one can get over whelmed by what is seen as opposed to what is believed and ultimately lose sight of the original goal.

A reset can be a mechanism that helps one to refocus on the goal and place all in the right perspective. Maybe it is a time you spend reading your favorite motivational author alone, maybe it is going on a special retreat alone, maybe it is embarking on that physically demanding trip or contest alone, or simply spending time away alone where one can reconnect with his God.

In all, the intended result is to come out a better being with a renewed focus, an enlightened heart, a rejuvenated mind, and a refreshed spirit.

Once a year, I embark on a reset. I encourage my mind and body by spending time reading positive spiritual material and I also reset the physical body by fasting. Both do wonders for the mind and body. The reading reminds me of whats important in this life while the fasting helps to reset and rejuvenate the internal workings of the organs and systems.

So, if you encounter life’s challenges and sometimes need to refocus on your goals a reset is maybe what you need.

So Why The Change

With todays ever changing food landscape it is important to be flexible when it comes to investing in ones health.

Hi, everyone! Hope you had a good week! I did! Busy, but went well. So why is it that I promote healthy eating you ask? So why the change? Well, let me share a story.

Some years back I adopted a particular lifestyle routine. It was busy meaning I had a regular job, very little sleep, some exercise and a diet that included eating fatty foods; pizzas, burgers, and plenty of processed foods. My energy level was quite low which resulted in me wanting to sleep all the time.  Although I rested for a good seven to eight hours, I still felt a bit fatigued. Shortly after I started a day and had a cup of coffee I noticed drowsiness setting in. In addition, I noticed my clothes fitting a bit tighter every where. This situation did not make me feel good about myself at all.

So after feeling like this and realizing this was not a healthy condition I decided to make a positive change with regards to my health. I concluded I did not want to feel sluggish anymore and wanted to lose the weight. This led me to seek expert/professional help, change what type of foods I was consuming, include supplements, and develop a physical fitness regimen.IMG_1915

The change resulted in a complete body change from the inside out. The guidance helped me to get educated on the internal workings of how our body works with regards to it digesting foods and the intended purpose. That information led me to replace and include certain foods in my eating regimen. This allowed for my internal digestive mechanisms to metabolize food more efficiently in order to get that maximum nutrition. I developed a physical fitness regimen which helped me to increase my metabolism to burn off excess calories. Lastly, supplements were included to help offset the loss of nutrition in foods today along with the increased loss of fluids during extreme physical fitness. So that’s why I changed.

If your story is like mine that is good to know. This means we both understand the dilemma and that we are not alone as we might have thought. Set a goal and understand there is a way to enjoy life to the fullest.  It is waiting for you to make that decision.  Remember to never be complacent but always be willing to change. What’s the benefit?

What are in the foods we eat and how they benefit the body. 

Hello friends. How are things? I hope all is well.

Got to thinking about writing a series on certain foods we eat and how they benefit the body.

Since I have changed the way and what I consume now, I thought I would share those thoughts with you all.

Why I changed? Well, I shared a bit of it in a previous post entitled “So Why the Change”. Here I kinda talk a bit about how I was feeling and the struggles I endured. I share the decision to make an about face with my whole eating and fitness plan. Yay! Glad I did! I feel absolutely great.

In this post, and the ones to come I want to share a few of the foods I consume as well as a progress report on my fitness journey.

So, here we go!

First, I changed a few of the foods I consume. I included more vegetables. In either a salad, blender or cooked way. One of those is the addition of cucumbers. Let’s see what this fella has to offer.

The Cucumber:

  1. Provides a good amount of water and soluble fiber-Water is always good to include in any diet. It helps with lubrication and flow of any waste or receiving nutrients. The fiber is a plus too. Fiber helps to remove waste from the body(intestines and gut). Kinda like a scrubber. Lol.
  2. Low in calories-A cucumber with the peel offers about 45 calories and is high vitamins and minerals.
  3. Good source of anti-oxidants-Cucumbers offer properties known to be associated with being an excellent source of antioxidants. Without going to chemically deep, in a nutshell, these are properties that help to fight against those molecular forces that encourage breakdown(oxidation), whatever that may be. In the sense of health, these forces(free radicals) are studied and believed to be associated with a few diseases today.
  4. Aid in weight loss-Due to the low-calorie content cucumbers can be a nice way to manage one’s weight. It is always a nice addition to any salad.
  5. Maintain Blood sugar-because of it low caloric value and high vitamin/mineral content cucumbers are believed to help in lowering blood sugar levels.
  6. Reduce swelling/inflammation-Cucumbers have the properties in them that help to reduce inflammation and swelling.

Although not a complete list, I have highlighted a few benefits to including cucumbers into your diet.

They are always great to have in salads, smoothies, and sandwiches.  My favorite is in salads. I eat them with skin or no skin and in the pickled variety too.

Try them if you have not. And if not your favorite, that’s cool, there are a variety of other vegetables to choose from with similar properties.
